kid craft Arisia

For the Magrathean Apprentice Workshop, what spherical objects could the kids decorate to make planets? My idea was the paper-mache-on-balloon trick. Persis, who has actually done paper mache and therefore knows what a PITA that would be, suggested that I price out styrofoam balls.

Here are some data points on how much it would cost to get some styrofoam or styrofoam-like balls: At A. C. Moore, the 6" diameter foam balls are about for $5 each. I think 6" is kind of too small, but over 6", the price goes up rapidly. On-line, save-on-crafts.com has 7" diameter balls for about $10 each. The manufacturer of smoothfoam offers 8" diameter balls for $12 each.

I dunno-- unless Arisia is rolling in it, these prices seem not viable to me. I am going to try making some paper mached balloon balls and see for myself just how much of a PITA this will be anyway. (How many kids should one be prepared to deal with at a Fast Track activity anyway?) Then we will see where this idea goes...
