I tend to plant things too close together. This is because when I grew vegetables as a child, I didn't have the presence of mind to start planting until fairly late in the season, and as the season progressed nearly everything got pulled up and fed to my beloved pet guinea pigs, so nothing ever got very big. So when I read things like "sow in rows 3 feet apart" I think you've got to be kidding. Now the garden is too crowded to move around in. Well, now I have a sense for how things grow, I'll be better next year.

Must deal with weeds more proactively. Must learn to mulch. Perhaps, sheets of newspaper (no color printing) covered with grass clippings? Must get the mulch down before the weeds have a chance to grow, i.e., right after planting. At this point it's totally hopeless, I am waving the white flag to the weeds. Although, I'm impressed, the vegetables are managing to out-compete the weeds pretty well AND produce food for me at the same time.

The tomatoes are going to be so productive!!! Only one tomato has ripened so far, but a few cherry tomatoes are really close (possibly ready to pick tomorrow) and there are lots of green tomatoes and lots of flowers. I will have to root around to find the little plastic plant marker to see what variety the second plant from the end inside the fence is. It's growing a phenomenal number of paste tomatoes.

weeds, you think you have weeds? Come over here sometime...

Raspberries still going strong here; I am picking 3-4 cups every other day. The fall-bearers have not bloomed yet, which may mean I won't get any from those plants... sigh. But the bounty from the summer bearers has at least 2 more weeks to go.

I have one almost-ripe cherry tomato and lots of green ones. yum...

Yeah, we planted a little too close together, but I can manage to get around. Our sugar-snap peas have finally played out after a vast production. The 2 sun-gold plants have produced about 10 yummy tomatoes so far and have suddenly kicked into overdrive and will be yielding a bunch more soon. Marc wants more sun-golds next year instead of regular peas. We also have a rather aggresive pumpkin vine taking over, but it only seems to be growing tons of flowers and no fruit...

Next year you can have Sophia help you plant. That should be really neat.
