book recommendations?
Jun. 17th, 2010 12:29 pmToday is Sophia's last day of school, so I will have to amuse her more of the time.
She reads at about a 4th-grade level (!) and this is before even starting Kindergarten. (This is why I think the public schools would fail to deal with her.) She is voracious. She has already read Alice in Wonderland, Alice Through the Looking Glass, several Magic Treehouse books, a Dilbert cartoon book, abridged versions of Frances Hodgson Burnett's books, and Little House on the Prairie.
Obvious books we should get ahold of soon:
* whatever Magic Treehouse books she hasn't read yet
* whatever Magic Schoolbus books she hasn't read yet
* the rest of the Little House books
* How to Eat Fried Worms
* Frances Hodgson Burnett's books
I want her to be more mature before she encounters Watership Down or any more Dilbert books, just so she will understand them more deeply and appreciate them better. She tells me she is not ready to deal with James Harriot's work. Let alone Tolkien, Harry Potter, etc... She's five. Just because she can sound out most of the words doesn't mean she can make sense of it all.
So what other thematically age-appropriate chapter books are out there?
