...for I have finally managed to put Murphy's Law into a paradoxical twist and had it work to our benefit. I'm talking about the, oh my god, Red Sox victory.

You're welcome.

Murphy's Law is usually slippery enough to slither out of any paradoxical knots you try to twist it into. You know, like it will only rain the days you don't take an umbrella-- until you take an umbrella to keep it from raining, and then it rains. You can't be deliberate about faking out Murphy's Law. You have to be fairly offhand and haphazard about it, I guess. It seems to have worked in this case.

A couple of days ago I accepted an invitation by candle_light to come over Wednesday evening to carve a jack-o'-lantern and eat cookies. It occurred to me after I accepted, wait, that will be game 4 of the World Series... and the Red Sox have won both games so far... even such a casual fan as I shouldn't miss seeing them win the World Series. But then I thought, pshaw! To think they will win the World Series is outrageous enough. They have an amazing knack for not winning the World Series, as everyone has noticed. To think that they will SWEEP the World Series is just too outrageous, too freakin' impossible. They will have to have won 8 games in a row to clinch on Wednesday; what kind of miracle is that? Sure, they won both games against the Cardinals so far, but the Cardinals do way better at home.

Then they won the game on Tuesday. Slightly unnerving, but hey, Pedro is supposed to be legendary.

I figured I'd go to candle_light's by myself and leave Sweetie, the life-long to-the-core Sox fan, to watch the game. I figured I'd call him at about, oh, the 5th inning to see how things were going, and come home to watch the end of the game if they were winning, to share the joyous event. But he wanted to take my car this morning, and I insisted that if he was driving my car, he had to give me a ride back from work after the evening. So in the evening, we both wound up driving straight to Billerica together, where we both got caught up in carving pumpkins and eating cookies, and then I read pregnancy books and Sweetie helped push over an old oil tank. This went on long into the evening. Sweetie was not concerned about missing the game because he had programmed the MythTV to record it, and figured that as long as he watched the recording before anyone spoiled the surprise for him, there wasn't any difference between that and watching it live. I felt kind of weird about not being glued to the TV to possibly see, live, the event that Boston has been waiting for for 86 years, but I kept pushing that thought away, thinking a sweep? no way!

Way. It happened. I can't believe it.

Hmm. Maybe I shouldn't watch TV on November 2nd either. Naw, Murphy will get revenge and not let me repeat that trick.

I'm thinking of either hosting or attending a MoveOn get-out-the-vote phone party on Tuesday. Normally I hate phone work, I'm terrible on the phone. But this is supposed to involve just talking to Kerry supporters, not trying to sway anyone or get into any discussion but just prod people to vote. And I want the company of other politically-aware people to get me through the day. Thanks to hammercock for the suggestion!

Anyone interested in joining me?
