call me a sicko, but...
Dec. 11th, 2007 05:02 pmSo there was this fluff piece on NPR about man-eating lions in Africa who ate a bunch of railway workers... I call this a fluff piece because this is not current news, no way, the lions in question ate the men in question about 100 years ago, and the only tenuous link to news was that the stuffed remains of a couple of the lions are going on some museum exhibit tour. Anyway, some NPR journalist was inspired by this to research the story, interview lion experts, etc., and it was one of those mid-day lite news stories.
All the lion experts agreed that it is unusual for lions to go after humans, generally opining that humans must not taste very good, but they had somewhat varied explanations of why this particular band of lions got into the habit. It occurred to me: why don't humans taste very good? Is it because most humans include some meat in their diet? Would vegetarians taste better? And then they mentioned: many of the victims where railway workers who had just come over from India. I presume those workers were mostly vegetarians. Ah-hah!
Sadly, I can't think of any way to test this hypothesis.
