a flavor success
Jun. 27th, 2011 12:29 pmIt was Sophia's idea to make a grape ice cream. I was thinking of the bland green grapes we get at the grocery store, and couldn't imagine it working, so I nearly "yes-dear"ed the idea to death.
Then, at Baitcon, I saw on the breakfast table a pitcher containing some very purple grape juice. I remembered that that kind of grape juice has a very strong grapey flavor, and figured that the flavor and color would come through well even when mixed with cream, especially if boiled down into a concentrate. I swooped up the pitcher and sought out the advice of Sam, and Kimberly, who suggested that I definitely boil it down, and add the sugar (not very much) while boiling. I got the concentrate ready just in time for the tail end of the kid's ice-cream making session, so I gave it to Sophia to mix with cream so she would get credit for the flavor (it being her idea in the first place). She named it "Silly Grape".
It was terrific! Nice fruity flavor. Thumbs up from everyone, including Kimberly, who wished that Jailbait was there for the running of the kids' flavors on Sunday so he could taste it (of course it got polished off right away).
Next year I will make a slightly bigger batch, for the grown-ups, so more folks can try it. And give it a more clever name; there isn't anything silly about it. Will have to talk to Kimberly about the exact quantity. (Nothing was measured but) I started with about 2 cups of juice, boiled down to probably less than a cup, and we half-filled the yogurt container, so that would have been about 2 cups of ice cream? As a variation, I think it would also work well with chunks of other fruit in it, but just plain grape is a very yummy starting point.
