oh, Star Trek...
Oct. 20th, 2018 06:30 amLast night we watched Space Seed which I had not ever seen before.
On the one hand, Ricardo Montalbán is a great. But, it bothers me that Khan Noonien Singh, who is supposedly Punjabi, has a Spanish accent. !!! Very jarring. I'm sure this has been ranted about before, at length, elsewhere...
I went on Wikipedia afterwards, curious whether there were clues as to how this came about. Today it is easy to cast an Indian actor; there are so many great Bollywood actors. Didn't Bollywood exist in the 1960's? According to Wikipedia, Gene Roddenberry was trying to get the attention of an old friend named Singh whom he had lost contact with. Hahaha. Total fail there. If Singh ever did see the show, I'll bet he thought "these American fools... They write a part for an Indian character, and then cast a Red Indian to play him? Offensive!" Gene, dude, not all exotic accents sound the same, and not all brown people look alike.
