Never been, actually. But I'm willing to try new things, and I had a disappointing weekend here in Boston.

What I didn't realize beforehand was that Rich had some interest in going. Not that we have to go together everywhere-- certainly not-- but I would've liked someone to hang out with-- and though I like hanging out with you, this was your chance to spend some time with Merav. Turns out, before he went to DC, Rich was thinking "hmm, maybe I want to try Falcon Ridge this year." But he didn't mention it to me-- and since he had so turned up his nose at NEFFA, I wasn't inclined to invite derision by bringing it up with him-- and then in the hustle and bustle of the trade show in DC, he FORGOT that Falcon Ridge was coming up.

new things are good, and hanging out is good. i know a lot of folkies already, so i have plenty of folx to kibbitz with, plus i meet new people pretty easily at these things, so it's a toss up. i went alone, ended up being buddies with my two tent neighbors (as last year), and will probably invite some of them to various boston area events later - i think they'd fit into some of the circles.

on the other tentacle, i find it kinda amusing that in the last couple years, some 'boids have finally got enough critical mass that they all want to attend things like falcon ridge. together, or not at all. we've had that happen in regular waves at vfw, but it seems that it's not always to the group's liking and they leave. the dynamics are interesting i think.

very few people seem to do things on their own, although, the ones that really do, don't particularly tell everyone they are either. which is also fascinating.

hmmmm.

personally, i think FR and such are the greatest things, but that's because of what i get and put into it. others may find the whole lot horrifying. that's life i guess.

NEFFA and FRFF are really, really different. To a reasonably close approximation, NEFFA is about dancing, and FRFF is about music. (Although there is a very active dance program at FRFF.) I'm with Rich on both counts. (And I just got a[nother] guitar, too. I hope the baseball thing isn't catching, though. Not so sure about banjos, either...)

Catch the baseball bug! It's fun! Well, rather boring to watch much of the time, unless you're just fried, but you can get a lot of work done "watching" baseball.

Don't worry, I'm sure you have to have a really rare phenotype to catch the banjo bug.

Speaking of baseball, might you and Rich be interested in spending a weekend (maybe even next weekend) in Cooperstown, NY? The family summerhouse is a nice place, there are many acres of woods to roam in, there is of course the whole Hall of Fame thang, and I think you two could cope with my parents (and vice versa). If this sounds like something you'd be interested in, let me know.

i picked up a small 2 octave accordian for $20 :> perhaps it's a harmonica in disguise. who knows, but it works, and is quite neat.

NEFFA certainly about dancing for the dancers, but it's VERY about music and performing, if you're a musician.

falcon ridge is such a hodge podge. there's a public view, of a fair, with music and incomprehensible dancing :> for the dancers (me), it's a fair with LOTs of good dancing and music, and i also enjoy some of the performers, which is basically a view only thing. for the musicians, it's a big deal too. workshops and such.

it's also just a pretty pleasant 3-5 days of tailgate camping for someone wanting to "get out" and be able to do a variety of stuff and have a base to do it. it's spiff.
