On the BBC tonight they were talking about today's US election results, and there was some talk of "mischief voting" in Michigan-- Democrats crossing party lines to vote for Santorum, just to weaken Romney, who is presumably the stronger candidate against Obama.
Don't do that! Please, I beg you, in the name of all that is good. Santorum is pure evil. If you totally discount the remotest possibility that Santorum could win against Obama (which I wouldn't... see below), the worst thing that could happen is that Romney still wins the nomination, but after a tough convention, in which he has to make concessions to all that Santorum stands for. All the ridiculous stupidity that Santorum stands for. Strong also-rans get power in the party: power to influence the platform, and probably more tangibly, power to influence the selection of the VP candidate. Can you imagine, Santorum as VP candidate? OK, so here's the nightmare scenario: Santorum makes it to the convention (with the help of stupid people on both ends of the spectrum); he gets the VP nomination; unemployment, gas prices, etc., continue to suck, people blame Obama, the liberals don't turn out for Obama, and the Romney-Santorum ticket squeaks out a victory; then Romney has a freak brain aneurysm or something, and we have, tah-dah, President Santorum!
I would never entirely discount the possibility of any major-party candidate winning, anyway. What about the dreaded "October surprise"? What if there's another al-Qaeda massive terrorist attack between now and November? Could happen, right; you don't think all that security theater they've put in place since 2001 could be totally effective, do you? What if Obama is the one with the brain aneurysm? Who would you rather have for President: simple but harmless Joe Biden, or Mr. Pure Evil Rick Santorum; but who do you think would energize their base more on election day? Please, do not advance Santorum another square forward on the chess board, no matter how weak you think his position will be.
