chhotiiMy calendar tells me that my 30-day free trial period for Adobe CS6 has probably just expired. If, in fact, it expires 30 days from the time you sign up for the free trial, rather than 30 days from the time you finally get the fucking thing to download. In the 30 days of trying, here is what I tried:
1. Tried to get it to download: failed.
That's it. *exasperated sigh*
OK, so 30 days ago I signed up, tried to download, wouldn't go, wouldn't go, errors 105, 106, and 109 all over the place. Then I looked at the tech specs and realized, duh, never did get around to upgrading to 10.6. I figured that was probably the problem, although I did think, rather grumpily, that the Download Assistant should have checked the OS version and told me if that was the problem. Finally got around to going though the couple of days of hassle of trying to figure out if anything would break if I upgraded to 10.6, upgrading, and then dealing with the unexpected things that did break. (I have some rather customized things going on on my computer-- shell scripts calling utilities that clearly Apple thought nobody was using, and enough C code that something was allergic to the smallest GCC tweak.)
Finally, all that done, I tried to download CS6 again to try to evaluate really fast. Once again, errors 105, 106, "this product already being downloaded", error 109, over and over again. Clearing cookies and all that, no help. Chat session with tech support was totally useless; the guy just sent me pointers to the same troubleshooting advice I had already read, and advised me to be patient.
So far I am not getting a warm and fuzzy feeling about Adobe's ability to deliver web content that actually works. And yet-- and yet-- I have seen lots of stuff in Flash that seems to just work. So I guess they put the smart guys on core Flash development, and off-shored the downloader and installer to a bunch of idiots? I guess I have to hope so-- I don't see any alternative, as the whole Java Applet thing seems pretty broken, and I'm not sure I've seen any Java Applets that aren't just little toys.
