For school, Sophia needs to choose a chapter book she's never read before. But I haven't had a chance to take her to the library.

There's some series of books for young readers I've never read, but which I heard about somewhere. In the first book, a boy finds a dragon egg. And the dragons talk? Or communicate telepathically?

What am I thinking of?

Eregon but it is a LONG book and not a storybook. I'm sure there are several who match that description.

Yeah, I think it's Eragon I'm thinking of. Thanks.

Hrmpf, looked it up on Amazon. It doesn't look too promising after all.

We have a copy if you'd like to look at it. And it deals with some very mature topics. I read it after Liam finished the series.

I don't remember how old Sophia is, but "Black Beauty" comes to mind. There's also the Little House on the Prairie books. Eragon is quite long. Can she use the Hobbit?

I'd second "Black Beauty" if she has any interest in horses at all. But be sure it's the unabridged edition. (I had an abridged edition with pictures when I was young, and was mad when I found the "real thing" and it was so much better! Of course a lot of the abridgement was taking out the really traumatizing scenes, or making them very short... e.g. Black Beauty's encounter with Ginger when she's a carriage horse and falls down from exhaustion in a London street.)

It might not be the one you're thinking of, but Benjamin really liked My Father's Dragon and the other two books in that series.

It sounds a bit like "The DragonRiders of Pern" by Anne McCaffery? My memory is those are aimed at a more middle-school audience though.

Ditto unabridged edition. Actually, it might be a good after-book report to read the unabridged, then the abridged, just so Sophia can see how abridged editions wreck the whole feel of the story.

Maybe in some future year, given the mature topics. Thanks.

Sophia's done with the red Children's Hour books BTW. You wanted them back for your grandkids? I know that's a long way off, but I make sporadic efforts at decrufting sometimes.

Ooh, we will have to read Black Beauty sometime.

Of course, by now, Sophia has read all the Little House books. Except made not the last (after Laura is married).

Hah, I tried to get Sophia started on the Hobbit! She wasn't into it.

ok.

Let's talk about getting them back sometime after Arisia.
