chhotiiIf you live in Somerville or Medford (or the west end of Cambridge or Winchester), please e-mail your Massachusetts State Senator, Pat Jehlen, and ask her about re-introducing “An Act relative to gender identity on Massachusetts identification”. In the previous legislative session, Karen Spilka introduced this as S.2377. You can view the bill ( short and sweet) here: https://malegislature.gov/Bills/190/S2377/BillHistory This was also introduced in the House as H.4499. But Jim Lyons killed it.
Now that Jim Lyons is out, I am hoping we can get this legislation re-introduced and passed. There are many transgender, intersex, and genderqueer individuals whose identities are erased by insisting that everyone fits into a strict "M" vs. "F" duality.
What appears on one's driver's license may seem like a trivial matter, but this issue is urgent and personal for me. My kid, Vic, identifies as genderqueer. Within the next two years (i.e. within this upcoming legislative session which starts on January 2nd), it will be time for Vic to start learning to drive. But they are so insulted by government's insistence that they be shunted into one traditional gender identity box or the other, they are at this point unwilling to apply for a learner's permit.
I am confident that we can get this fixed, if we just make the progressive leadership of the Massachusetts legislature aware of this issue.
