add that to the shopping list
Feb. 5th, 2004 05:15 pmI have realized that I should buy some decaf instant coffee. It took a long time for this idea to occur to me. Sure, people drink brewed coffee for the taste, not just the drug effect, but I think of instant coffee as emergency caffeine supply in case the coffee machine is not available, filters ran out, etc. I generally dunk some instant coffee in a glass of cold milk, if I have milk. I've been doing this for so long that I've come to prefer the taste of coffee milk over milk. I was thinking about what I could drink to try to keep hydrated-- tiring of the Diet Cape Cod Dry and the Sleepytime tea-- and I wanted something with sort of the texture of milk (if that makes any sense) but I missed the bitterness of coffee. I have regular instant coffee, but I don't want to put any in my milk now because tomorrow will go a lot better if I sleep well tonight. Thus, the nutty conclusion that I need decaf instant coffee.
I made some hot chocolate instead, the kind that requires actual milk. This sort of fit the milk niche and chocolate flavor has some of the same themes as coffee, so it was almost ok, but all that sugar was sort of hard to take. Instant decaf coffee would be a good thing if it keeps me out of the calorific hot cocoa. Come to think of it, I guess instant coffee is not the weirdest substance that we drink just because we don't like plain milk or water but don't want caffeine, sugar, or alcohol. I mean, really, what justifies the various chemicals that turn regular carbonated water into Caffeine-Free Diet Coke? The soda industry is huge, and based entirely on the fact that people don't like plain water.
