I hate winter.

Yesterday I didn't bundle up enough. I should have put on All The Layers. But, I figured, time would mostly be spent inside, where it shouldn't matter. The only time outside would be spent walking briskly to get from one inside locale to another. I wasn't going to get hypothermia while walking, and I didn't need to enjoy myself outside, I just needed to walk faster.

But the evening's entertainment, Other magazine's launch party, was in this little art gallery consisting of a single room with a front door directly opening to the outdoors. No double door or foyer. So every time someone came or went, the air would energetically set about equalizing in temperature between inside and out. It was a little brisk inside.

This was alright when I first got there and they were doing readings. While I had speakers' words to focus on, I could put the cold out of mind. But then the live music started. Amusing enough little band, with a great name-- Honest Bob and the Factory to Dealer Incentives. But not absorbing enough entertainment to put the realization that I was cold out of my mind. Other sources of diversion-- such as, say, having a conversation-- were ruled out by the loudness of the band.

I can pass time pleasantly enough just listening to music if I can sit back and relax, especially if I can sit back and relax with some drink. I couldn't sit back-- I was too busy shivering. I couldn't relax-- I was too cold to ever take my coat off, and felt like a dork wearing my coat. I couldn't even bear the thought of mellowing out with a bottle of ice-cold Corona, the beverage opportunity on hand. (Some hot cider would have been preferred.) Just looking at the cooler full of beer bottles in ice water made me feel colder.

With nothing to do but look at the band, and not able to relax enough to get into the experience, I was pretty bored. Winter is miserable. Bleh.

A tip...

Those disposable chemical handwarmer things are quite portable; I usually have a couple stashed in my winter coats (note to self: used them all up at the SF marathon, need to buy more) for situations like that. At $2 each or less, they're well worth it.
