I so need to get an answering machine. My tricks for screening out junk calls: 1) usually I wait at least 4 rings before answering, because the junk callers only let it ring 4 or 5 times; 2) if there's a several-second delay after I say "hello", I hang up. Wonder if I've accedentily hung up on friends who were just spacing out when I answered, though?

Off to bathe baby, and then to Cambridge to get beer...

I used to just hang up, too, when I was more regularly answering a phone line which got any junk calls. If it's a friend, they'll call back. If it isn't, they won't. Pretty simple, so you don't have to worry.

Actually, no, this method should work fine.

(I have a cell phone only now, and hardly ever get junk calls, but when they do come, they seem *especially* annoying.)
