Aug. 18th, 2005 03:50 pmOK, no wonder the HR folks are so pissy at me. Turns out that my health insurance is REALLY REALLY expensive and they have been paying a large chunk of it. Fair enough that they want me to stop being an expense.
I should start thinking about going back to work pretty soon. But, 10 days is too rushed. I get very stubborn when I feel like I'm being forced into something. Little Sophia has never even tasted formula; what if I committed to going back to work and then she refused to drink it? We need more time to work out a solution.
I can probably get new glasses within the month of August, and make use of all that vision insurance I've been paying for. But, the dental, uh-oh. I could get an emergency appointment for a check-up by simply explaining that my insurance is running out. But what do I do with the baby while I'm in the dentist chair? I'll bet the dentist won't appreciate having a cranky baby parked in a stroller next to me while he does my teeth; also, I don't want her in the room while they x-ray me. She's had enough x-ray exposure already.

Date: 2005-08-19 06:26 am (UTC)I wouldn't count on S being willing to drink formula at this late point. Honestly, it tastes like crap, especially when compared to breast milk. Is pumping going so poorly that you can't stockpile some frozen stuff?
If you wait a few more months before going back to work perhaps S will be eating a lot more solid food and could go longer intervals between nursing? Would you be working fulltime hours? If you're going part time, maybe nursing before work and then lots after work? Could your mom bring S down at lunchtime to nurse? If you got child care near your employer you could go over during the day to nurse. I've known people who've gone that route. Just musing about possible scenarios, hope you don't mind...
Good luck with all this, I know it's hard.

Is pumping going so poorly that you can't stockpile some frozen stuff? Yes.
If you wait a few more months before going back to work perhaps S will be eating a lot more solid food and could go longer intervals between nursing? Yeah, I guess eventually the problem will solve itself that way.
Would you be working fulltime hours? Nope!
If you're going part time, maybe nursing before work and then lots after work? Well, because of the commute, the days when I do go into work will be pretty long. I'd rather do a couple long days per week than a bunch of short days, otherwise I'd be spending all my time commuting. She'll get really hungry on my work days if she doesn't eat something.
Could your mom bring S down at lunchtime to nurse? Ah, I wish! I was really really hoping my mom would take an interest in buying a condo downtown so I could see Sophia at lunchtime. But, Mom seems really enthused about living out here in the 'burbs. The commute is daunting, so it's not really practical for Mom to take Sophia to my workplace. Argh, I should've been more pushy with her about entertaining the idea of getting a condo in town... I could have made her go to Open Houses, maybe had her rent a place short-term to try out the idea, even discussed helping her with the cost... But, 1) I suppose I imagined that the pumping thing would work out better, and 2) I have been reluctant to put her money or any more of mine into the overheated housing bubble.
If you got child care near your employer you could go over during the day to nurse. When Sophia is older, finding acceptable child care options will be easier. I think pre-school is a great thing for bigger kids. Of course, though, when she's bigger, she will be eating all kinds of food and drinking cow milk! At this point, she's such a baby, I have trouble imagining acceptable day care.
Good luck with all this, I know it's hard. Thanks!
