this time, I am whining
Apr. 7th, 2003 03:26 pmToday has been a very blah day, starting off with getting up when I would really have rather slept in. I hate daylight savings time with a passion. It is the stupidest thing ever. I have never heard any really satisfactory explanation for why this is inflicted on us. Various lame excuses... such as, they don't want to have children walking to school in the dark in the winter. If they don't like the timing of when children are walking to school, then why not just change when school starts? Are the schools' schedules written in stone? Why make all of us who don't have children suffer for this? Sure, people like the sudden magic "extra" hour of daylight in the summer evenings. But dude, if you want that extra hour, time-shift yourself, don't force the rest of us to time-shift. Forcing everyone to time-shift the same day leads to a big increase in traffic accidents on the first Monday of April, on top of who knows how much increased grumpiness. I understand that if there were different summer and winter hours for some things, then some people would have some inconveniences, but the current system causes everyone hassle.
I would have stayed in bed, anyway, but it occurred to me as I was dozing that I had planned to get up and move my car so that Pup could get to work. Not that Pup was itching to get to work at the new re-defined 9:00 am, since he was also up at the new re-defined 1:00 am, sampling our homemade granola and cursing about how late it was. Yup, that's right-- I was up at 1:00 am, when I should have been in bed trying to alter my circadian rhythm. My bad. Rich and I had just gotten back from ceo & gosling's, where we had enjoyed one of the best craftnite gatherings ever.
Craftnite had a rather small turnout, but that was fine, for it was social and homey without being loud and distracting. I sketched in some code for parsing the MedAptus data, which inspired Rich to try to get the software running. He couldn't get it to run, which led to an important discussion that we needed to have about where that project is going, so the end result was very productive. We enjoyed ceo's mushroom pizza and saw friends and at the same time got a lot of work done. Just what craftnite should be.
But today, I'm just exhausted. Frazzled by everything, just can't figure out what to do about the crash bug that I can't reproduce and which only seems to manifest after running a test scenario for an hour.

Date: 2003-04-08 11:46 am (UTC)Our society is such a slave to The Mighty Schedule (i.e. school starting times, work times, store hours, etc) that if it were feasible we'd shift the axial tilt of the Earth to ensure that the Sun did our bidding. Since we can't do this, the next-best thing is to do this massive shift of our clock's relation to the Sun... all so that the holy Schedule can be kept.
I wonder how many other folks hate daylight savings as much as you and I do? I know that certain states (e.g. Arizona) simply opt out of the whole scheme (of course, AZ has more than enough sunshine year round, it's not like they have to Save Daylight for a rainy day or whatnot). What if sizeable numbers of individuals were to do the same thing? Would the resulting chaos be sufficient to overturn the silly system once and for all?
"Meet you at 3PM".
"Right. Remember I'm on Standard Time".
"Oh, make it 2 then"
