Well, if your Mac is stuck, so hosed that, say, option-command-esc doesn't get you anywhere, press and hold the power button for about 10 seconds. This forces the computer to shut down.
This is the very important thing I learned today.
(Oh, and the other very important thing: Don't get an iMac!)
