I am reeling with disappointment. I thought that McCain might try to undercut the Dems on the identity-politics thing... by picking Condi Rice. Now, Rice must be evil (she's in the Bush administration), but still, I was secretly kinda excited about the idea. She's smart. And, my conclusion from the past 8 years is, if we must have evil leaders, I'd prefer that they at least be smart. The combination of evil and stupid has been disastrous. Not that I would vote for a McCain-Rice ticket, of course, but at least I'd be saying, hmm, this will be interesting.

Maybe Rice is too smart for McCain. I heard that McCain graduated-- what, 5th?-- 5th from the bottom of his Naval Academy class. Rice is too smart for McCain and the stupid Fox-News-watching crowd; I imagine they're more comfortable with a ditz like Palin.

Hey, if squeezing out 5 kids (one of which is special) is qualification to be POTUS-- I could do that! Hmm, just 4 more to go-- given the high chance of twins at my age-- 3 pregnancies in 6 years, then be ready to run by the time I'm in my late 40's. But, oh wait, I've got that scary Ivy League diploma holding me back. Well, such things can be down-played, just like Palin's beauty-pageant thing. (Just kidding!)

I recommend yesterday's electoral-vote.com's one-act play talking about McCain's reasons for Palin's choice. The "neutral observers" article linked there also has a good analysis, basically that picking Palin was a great campaign move (in that it took the spotlight off Obama), but maybe not so much a good presidential one.

A month, or even a couple of weeks, is an eternity in politics. By October, the buzz from this will have long since died down, and don't forget that a lot of the buzz is happening on a holiday weekend. Whether Palin will sway enough swing state voters on election day remains to be seen. Also, Dick Cheney aside, the veep has rarely been a major factor in the administration, and Palin is no Cheney. If McCain is elected and then dies in office, the machine will keep her in line (just like it has with W), so it really will be just more of the same. Cold comfort, I know...

The more conservative element that I sometimes hang around with is a lot more excited about her than they'd ever be about Condi Rice. They see her as having good conservative credentials but without a lot of ties to the current administration (which appears to be a feature on either side of the fence), and she's reportedly made a lot of enemies by bucking the Republican establishment in Alaska, another plus. It meshes well with the whole "maverick" image. Despite at least vaguely following Alaskan politics, though, I don't really have enough of a sense of her either way.

Granted, given their location and general tendencies, my "conservatives" may in reality be more like "Reagan democrats", but that's still (maybe even moreso) his target audience.

And hey, an Ivy League diploma worked for Bush; I'm sure the GOP would take you in if you asked nicely!

I think it was a brilliant choice by McCain's campaign managers, and it seriously worries me. She is superficially earthy-crunchy while actually being politically really conservative. (If I was being far bitchier than I usually allow myself to be about someone else's parenting I might say she uses her children as accessories to boost her political image extremely effectively.)
