conflicting societal messages

On the one hand, society says "be responsible for your child; know where she is and what she's doing at all times."

On the other hand, it says "don't be a helicopter parent."

How do you resolve these conflicting ideals?

I have in my notes that I registered all of us for Arisia and sent them a check ($120) but as of the latest statement printing, the check had not been deposited. Is there any way to check whether the registration was received or lost in the mail?
