compost extra-goodness
Sep. 13th, 2008 06:16 pmOne time I was reading some gardening on-line forum (don't remember the site). The question was "What is the strangest thing you've ever seen in your compost pile?" The answers were all like: "Deer!" "Raccoon!" "OMG, a moose!" Yeah, yeah, animals get into compost piles, looking for something not too rotten to eat, I get the picture.
Later on, we found something that topped all those responses.
Potatoes.
Not mushy, icky, moldy potatoes, which we put into the compost pile all the time. No, we found lovely, perfect, little potatoes. Really tasty little potatoes, actually.
Of course, I know enough about the life cycle of potatoes to understand how you can get, from mushy icky moldy potatoes, lovely perfect tasty little potatoes. But here's the strange part: we never saw the plant. You would think we would have noticed the potato crop growing on the compost heap before, um, inadvertently harvesting it.
