optimism and pessimism
Nov. 2nd, 2008 07:17 pmIn some on-line discussion, someone said "if Obama loses... I can't imagine what it would take to get a Democrat into office." Oh, besides having a smart, charismatic leader running against a Republican who isn't well-liked within his own party, after 8 years of a disastrous Republican administration, a boondoggle of a war, and the near-collapse of the economy into depression? Duh, some people have lost sight of the obvious; if all that's not enough, it's because we have a candidate that lacks the basics:
1) white skin;
2) good looks and fashion sense;
3) a plain ordinary British name; and
4) a really easy time in the primary.
Duh!
Not to say I'm pessimistic. I hear that Obama's campaign is very well organized, and legions of folks are turning out to volunteer. This year has a much different feel from 2004, when we had such a complete dork running that the best cheer we could muster was "He's not Bush! He's not even a hamster!" In 2006 the anger against the Republicans materialized, and we see that it can be effective. Don't forget, it has to be close for the Republicans to steal the election; maybe this won't even be close.
I don't know. I'm not going to obsess over the polling data, or the quality of the polling data. We will see what happens, and then discuss it. Let's just keep in mind that we don't have enough to either be complacent or to despair; and going to either of these extremes will hurt our chances.
