Today's lunch: beer-flavored barley stew.

Words of wisdom from the voice of experience, now. If you start to feel like brewing beer, channel that urge into collecting beer bottles until you have enough. Five gallons calls for a lot of bottles, and you need ones that can be capped properly. Raid recycling bins early and often.

Rich made beer, and it's actually pretty good. But we've had to find creative uses for some of it. Fermentation seems to have gone a little faster than Rich anticipated, and a weekend that could have been spent looking for bottles got sucked down into the big black hole of Arisia. When the beer really really had to be bottled, some, um, creative solutions were deployed. Some of the beer went into Soc's stew... some went right into Rich... and some went into a huge old sake bottle. Problem is, the sake bottle didn't cap properly, and after a day or so, the cap on the sake bottle went AWOL. Ptoing, outta here! (We still haven't found the cap.)

Did I mention that the sake bottle holds about a gallon?

More creative uses for beer then in order. Re-bottling would probably not have been a good idea; after sitting capless for x hours, this beer was flat, plus who knows what bag bugs floated in. (Rule 1: don't let anything compete with your yeast.) Soc's stew came out pretty good, so we got stew meat and managed to cook with about half the bottle. Rather beery stew. Very relieved today to finally chomp through the last of it.

Now, what to do with the rest of the flat beer? Maybe make bread with it? (I think I've heard of such a thing.)

But dinner was quite good. Rich is becoming quite the pizza chef.
