watch those pull dates

You know the big Stop & Shop in Woburn, just off of I-95? (Exit 35 I think. The Route 38 exit.) I shopped there recently, and bought a couple of gallons of milk without looking at the pull dates, which turned out to be a mistake. One was at least a week past its pull date! And, yes, it was sour. Yuck-o. The other one was pretty close to its pull date and started going sour before we consumed very much of it (and we go through milk pretty fast in this house).
I was not in the habit of checking pull dates, because at Market Basket, the milk's pull dates are always well off into the future. I don't know why anyone would regularly shop at Stop & Shop rather than MB anyway; MB is cheaper and better staffed. Maybe this is why this Stop & Shop appears to be suffering. I only went there that once because Sophia and I went to A.C. Moore.
Unfortunately, I had Rich put away the groceries, and he did not save the receipt. You should always save the past week's grocery store receipt. I have occasionally had to return items after finding them to be spoiled, even when shopping at a high-end place like Whole Foods (although, of course, such unfortunate incidents are rare at WFM).
Saving your receipt can have other benefits. A few weeks ago I was lost in thought at the register, spaced out about getting my cash-back, and the cashier spaced out too and didn't give it to me. Hours later I realized I didn't have my $30, went to the Customer Service booth, and they said oh yes, that cashier was over in her drawer, here you go. No hassle at all. I must say, Market Basket is winning me over...
