For the dog food, probably much more of the gristle and fat that was filtered out in the "pink slime" centrifuge, and since it isn't for human consumption, maybe they don't even bother with the NH3 gas exposure. I mean, if it's only Fido, who cares if we let the nasty E Coli strain live. While were at at, make sure to order up another metric ton of melamine for filler.

This whole "pink slime", "mechanically separated meat", etc brew-ha-ha irks me. Not because is isn't worth discussing our food chain and how our food is produced, but because of just how polluted the dialogue gets with appeals to the emotions of folk who want to maintain their blissful ignorance that food involves killing other things, and that just about any food processing line is unbelievably gross, and the whole newage hippy-crap philosophy that tries to separate the whole world into neat and tidy little boxes of "natural chemicals == good", "synthetic/man-made chemicals == bad". I hope they don't think too hard about how their decaf coffee is generally produced.

There are all sorts of places where the mechanically separated meat process chain can go horribly wrong, but there is nothing inherently bad or unsafe about it. You could do it using 3rd world slave labor and swiss army knives, but centrifuges don't get tired and don't spit or drop cigarette ashes into the product. It would be great to not need to bother with the ammonia gas step, but the real problem here is way up the chain in the amount of corn fed to the cows to begin with, leading to a way too acidic rumen more friendly to the bad E Coli bugs.
