Second clueless question about bridal showers: Do people generally bring their kids? Hoping so; otherwise, not interested. On the one hand, Sophia always likes a party. On the other hand, not worth it to me if, both, I have to drive to Braintree for this thing, AND if we have to have child-care coverage figured out.

Generally you don't bring a kid who wasn't specifically invited to a wedding-related event. If the invitation was unclear about who exactly was invited, you can ask.

Always good to ask. I guess it depends on the bride and how well you know him/her. I've been to showers full of kids, I've been a kid at a shower. Girls are sometimes allowed but boys not as much (sometimes due to it being a "women only thing".) If she goes, she can be put "in charge" of making the ribbon/bow "hat"...a traditional thing which starts with a paper plate with a hole or two in the middle. Thread all ribbons thru the center, stick all sticky-bows to the top. When all presents are finished being opened, a traditional funny picture is made with the bride to be "wearing" (as much as is possible) the silly "hat". This is a great way to keep someone your daughter's age busy and interested in the proceedings.

IIRC Miss Manners' rule is to not bring kids without asking first.

My impression is that showers are strictly no kids unless they are specifically billed as a "family friendly" event. However, they vary widely in how fancy they are. I suppose there's no harm in checking, but to keep the hostess from feeling on the spot I'd probably phrase it more like "Hi, I assume the shower invitation means just me, but I thought I'd check - are people bringing their kids?" rather than "Can my daughter come?"
