Here's a stellar advantage of having a gas stove: If we do lose power, I can light the stove with a lighter, and we can have warm food anytime. Of course, if the power does go out, I will be very reluctant to open the refrigerator, to try to keep it as cold as possible for as long as possible and minimize food lossage. (Rich just bought a pile of meat, which should last us for weeks.) But of course in the pantry we have canned soup, canned green beans, rice, pasta, tuna, single-serving UHT milk, etc, etc. Good thing we have a manual can opener rather than an electric can opener.
