I don't know why Eudora won't send or receive mail using Ed's account on HMS's new e-mail server. Eudora is not nice enough to tell me what the error might be. Being a Mac user, obviously all I need to know is "it didn't work, (you worthless inferior being)." Mac programmers mostly have the attitude that hey, we can skip all that work involved in presenting error messages, because users can't handle that information anyway. And nothing ever goes wrong, right? And if something did go wrong, it's probably the user's fault anyway, so they deserve to suffer.

The Help Desk at HMS will not help. They say, "oh, off campus... He can use Web Mail. If he really wants to use a POP client, here's the URL for the documentation. And if it doesn't work, tough!"

So in the course of resetting Ed's Eudora to use the old server, I missed the start of step aerobics. Which would have been the closest thing to fun that I was going to have today. Fun in a rather spartan way. Good for stress relief, not as good as strangling the help desk folks at HMS and gunning down the Eudora programmers, but better than nothing. Now I have to think of something else to do for exercise. The exercise equipment in the fitness center is all old and wonky, so I can't deal with that right now, and it's cold outside, can't cope with walking to the gym either. Have run out of cope.

Delaying dealing with the workout issue (let alone any e-mail issues) by planting head in LJ, to catch up on gossip. Not a stress relief today, as I find a confirmation and a reminder that someone else on suspects, Boston-area is throwing a party on Halloween. The first time I get off my duff in over a year and follow up on the "gee Pondscumme is such a great house for hosting parties" idea, someone else grabs my date after I post. Not holding this against t, maybe she got excited about the idea of hosting a party before seeing my suspects post. But getting all paranoid that everyone will go to t's. Hey, she's got the hot tub.

Hot Tub, mmmmmmmm...

Haven't been in a hot tub in... Long enough. Consider, for a moment, cutting my own party for t's hot tub. Oh, wait, W's party is when... tomorrow? With a hot tub. *glee* Must remember to drink fluids this time, so I can manage to actually sit in the water without getting too faint.

Anyway, about the party: RSVP's: through e-mail, 3 definites, 1 maybe, 2 "we'll try to get there when we get off work... at midnight"; through e-mail, 1 definite and 1 "hmm I would feel strange if I didn't come". Counting the definites as 1 each, the wishy-washies as .5 each and the folks who get off work at midnight as .25 each, so, far, 5.5 attendees expected. If I say "surely more people will come, they just don't RSVP", then I set myself up for disappointment, made worse by the fact that I will have bought way too much food and drink. If I only expect 5.5 people, there won't be much food or drink there. This is the advantage of the potluck format. The amount of consumables scales, roughly, to the attendence.

Damnit, next time I will do potluck. I don't care if I'm not popular. A few people like me, and those people matter. But social lack of ease makes it hard if I have to feed these people.

Wonder if it's too late to late to declare that it's a potluck?

not too late

Not to mention, if it's not an RSVP sort of party, people should not be surprised if the hosts are not fully prepared for them, and be willing to help out, do food runs, etc.

(Nothing then suddenly two elbonian parties that night. Not sure which I'll attend. Depends on who I have with me, and how much driving we want to do, whether we want to go to both, etc. If I don't have someone to travel with, I am likely to go to the other one, which won't oblige me to find semi-urban parking and walk an unknown distance alone on a known hell night... )

we'll be at yours ;) email me privately for reasons :)

Many people will show up. and even if they don't, it will be fun (plus, for me, since I'll be wearing a GIGANTIC WEDDING DRESS, a less crowded party will be better anyway!)

see you in the hot tub :)

Is this the wedding dress from the clothing swap, or a different gigantic wedding dress?
can't wait to see...

the one from the clothing swap! But I will be wearing my huge crinoline to make it even more extreme, and a veil, too!

(BTW, we figured out that the dress was worn by Amelia's friend Morgan, who recently moved to Las Vegas. She hasn't been married for quite a while...)

We're all planning on being at your shindig. I didn't RSVP because I told R on the phone last night that we were coming. I asked him if we should RSVP anyways, and he said no (oooh, passing the blame, this is fun) :-)

We like you. Sorry you're angsting.

I haven't RSVP'd because I don't know my schedule for next weekend yet. If I go to any parties, I'm far more likely to go to yours than to the other one for various logistical reasons.

As for whether it's too late to declare your party a pot-luck, of course not. Since you didn't specify otherwise in your invite, a lot of people will bring stuff anyway, and when you send out your reminder next week, just say something like "we'll provide assorted drinks and munchies, feel free to bring stuff too." I don't think folks would be expecting you to feed them the equivalent of a full dinner in any case.

Well, I'll tell ya, since we are STILL not off our asses about show tickets, it's looking more and more like we'll be delighting in your presence for the full evening. Potluck is fine, though likely to be heavy on the sweets given the nature of the party - you could weight your shopping heavily toward savory/salties and drinks.

Buck up li'l camper. All those sucky people out there are going to die someday, and they probably won't like it.
