Sophia has asked to have the ends of her hair dyed some remarkable color. Such as purple, perhaps. Apparently other 4th graders are doing this; it's trendy. I'm not opposed to the idea, it just hasn't been a priority for me. (My mother, OTOH, is horrified. I think she's being silly and old-fashioned. I mean, we are not talking about permanent body modification here. The ends of Sophia's hair need to get trimmed off periodically *ANYWAY*; she grows lots more hair all the time.)

I figure it would be a good $WINTERHOLIDAY gift to give Sophia a box of hair dye, which would implicitly come with the promise that I will actually get around to doing the dying as soon as she wants to do it. Not that I have much else going on on December 25, once I'm done with the cooking.

So, I went looking to see if CVS has Manic Panic (the only brand of hair dye in striking colors I've ever heard of.) Of course they don't. They did have something along those lines-- brand name "splat".

So, questions: Is this "splat" brand hair dye just as good, or should I hold out for Manic Panic? Or something else? Where does one buy hair colors that aren't brown or black or blonde, anyway? (The CVS in Chestnut Hill devoted only about 6 inches of to these non-physiological hair colors, and there were only 3 shades of splat on display.) I'm told that Manic Panic doesn't come with the bleach; why the hell not? Anything I should know about the selection of bleach to use, or the color?

I pick up my hair dye at Newbury Comics.

Manic panic is what I like. Punky Color was terrible. Pravana Vivids are awesome, but spendy and I order them from Amazon. I don't know splat.

You really do want to bleach the ends, first. You can also get bleaching kits at Newbury Comics Comics. I get the 40 Volume, as my hair is really dark. As is Sophia's.

I'm planning on dying my hair again after Christmas, and I'll be picking up a bleaching kit. Want to bring Sophia over this weekend and we can do her hair at the same time? I have so little hair that I can share the bleach. :)

If Sophia would like to try a deep blue, I've got an unopened bottle of Raw (the Hot Topic house brand). It dyes quite intensely, and lasts well. (I got it to make a teal dye more blue, but was later able to just get the correct shade). Anyway, yours for the asking.

I have a bunch of partially used Manic Panic colors, sounds like Lori has bleach you could use. I have not heard good things about Splat or Punky Colors (although I have some of those, from a friend). For me, Manic Panic is the way to go, Special Effects and my hair do not get along.

What color does Sophia want?

Not a fan of Manic Panic, or Splat. The two best brands for color lasting are Raw Colors and Special Effects. The former is available at Hot Topic and the latter should be at Newbury Comica. Bleach is sold separately. When we bleached Talia's hair, we got the bleach at Sally Beauty Supply. (The bleach from other places probably works fine too.)

Make sure to put plastic wrap down on any surface - the dye will stain, quite permanently on polyurethane by the way. Wear gloves for the whole process, including for the initial use of conditioner after the dye process.

Each color fades differently too - for example the Raw Colors Deep Purple fades blue and the Special Effects Pimpin' Purple fades pink.

What better way to teach a kid about responsibility for their actions than something that has huge social consequences in the 4th grade world for about a month, but no long-term consequences?

(These days, I'd fret that Sophia might be breaking some stupid school rule, but presumably the "other 4th graders" are in the same school.)

That is interesting, because I found that on my hair Special Effects dye fades almost instantly.

The Ion brand at Sally's is good too, but not the other one they carry.
