The "suspects" mailing list is not freecycle. Freecycle mailing lists are a great thing; however suspects is not one of them. An even better thing is the "free" category of Craigslist, where people who are actually looking for free stuff will actively go looking for free stuff and can even narrow their search for free stuff by geographic location and keyword.

Perhaps I am overcynical, but I find reading elbows with suspects filtered out to be a much better reading experience. People who send mail to the former want to have a conversation and engage with their audience. People who send to the latter mostly just want to advertise something off-topic and feel self-important enough to use suspects for it.

I viewed them as wanting to see if any of the "like minded people" might want things before trying a larger audience.

And suspects is so low bandwidth now that the posts I think you're talking about were a mere pebble in the avalanche.
