Aug. 2nd, 2016 08:19 amFive-thirty-eight (Nate Silver's forecast) now shows a convention bounce for Clinton, which is reassuring.
Meanwhile Trump is doing his best to shoot his own foot off attacking the Khans, whose beautiful son was killed serving in the U.S. military. Here's what any sane, decent person would say to the Khans: Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Khan. We love you. Your family is the kind of people that make this country great: your son was a hero. What Trump is saying: Look at these people, so foreign, so other, different, Muslim. Look at their weird cultural background: they didn't let the woman speak! That charge is ridiculous, btw. I watched the Khan family's appearance at the DNC. The father did all the talking, and said everything there was to say. As the mother stood by him, her eyes and her body language clearly said This. Everything my husband is saying. Nothing culturally alien about Mrs. Khan's decision to let her husband do the talking. I would find it hard to stand on a stage in front of thousands of people, and television cameras, and talk about the death of a loved one. (The mother of a young man killed in Orlando also spoke at the DNC; she had to have her son's friends on stage holding her the whole time.)
Mr. Trump is speaking to the core of his support, people so bigoted that they can look at a Gold Star family and see only repellent alien differences. Pollsters say that the core of the bigotry team is the older, white, less-educated set-- and that this demographic is shrinking. Evidence for the claim that most of us are more evolved than the hard-core bigots is the election-- twice!-- of an African-American with a funny name.
Way to go, Donald! Take aim and shoot again!

Date: 2016-08-04 02:10 am (UTC)Maybe, but I think Trump may have screwed himself, because this time really is different. His base considers military service as a sacrament, like holy offices. E.g., the president of the VFW has denounced Trump.
As a corollary, it's this incident that's convinced me that Trump really is out of control, rather than being a clever manipulator.
