chhotiiHere's a terrifying thought. If, God forbid, something were to happen to either of our very fine Senators here in Massachusetts, the Governor would then appoint someone to serve until a special election could be held, yes? Our governor is a Republican. Yeah, I know, Charlie Baker seems like such a moderate and inoffensive type of Republican*, and you don't want the species known as "moderate Republican" to go extinct. But he's endorsed Diehl, Trump's campaign manager for Massachusetts. Presumably this means Baker thinks it would be a very fine idea to send a Trump sycophant to D.C. as our Senator. Would Baker have the audacity to appoint someone so alien to our values as our Senator? Why the hell not? The Republicans are shameless.
Imagine this scenario, after the start of the next Congress: The Senate is split 50-50; Trump can only get a rapist, stooge, or industry shill into the cabinet or on a judge's bench if he can get every single R into line. Then... Something tragic happens, and one of our good and reasonable D's is out of the picture, and Baker appoints Diehl, the Trump fan-boy. Trump continues to have no checks whatsoever on his evil whims... because of Massachusetts. Shudder.
There's a Democrat running to try to unseat Baker, named Jay Gonzalez. Yeah, I know, he's short and balding and hasn't had the money to run TV ads. But please start noticing him, people, please; he might be the only thing standing between us and a nightmare scenario.
*Though some of us who have been paying attention to issues at the state level have plenty of grounds for being offended by Baker.
