Heard on Marketplace today: European business leaders (especially the Germans) are really freaked out over the difference of opinions between their governments and the US administration. They fear that this will lead to ill-will from American buyers and thus loss of sales. Oh pshaw, I thought. Surely Americans who buy European products aren't so violently in favor of war on Iraq that they don't see that reasonable minds might differ on how to proceed. But, indeed, French cheese makers claim to see lower sales to the US of late. Ugh.

Buy more French cheese! Cheese cheese cheese! Now now now now! (Let's have some wine with that too.) Whatever the right thing to do about Iraq might be, it would be a real shame if the US intimidates the rest of the world into going along with whatever hare-brained war-mongering half-baked foreign policy the White House deludes itself into with our buying power.

Mmmm, cheeeeeeeeese.

half-baked. cheese. great, now I have a craving for a swiss and gruyere fondue.

Alas, I have no buying power at present, so can't show solidarity through materialism. :(

Indeed, I think perhaps expensive French cheeses are not selling as well because the economy continues to suck. If people are feeling the pinch, many of them are just not going to see the point of spending a lot of money on expensive imported items. This shouldn't be so hard for the Germans and French to understand. Sheesh.
