waiting for COBRA

chhotiiWhen my job ended the HR department initially did not believe me about this. Nobody had told them. There's like "we see you still in the system as being in your benefits-eligible position... We think we still employ you? Check with Research?" Meanwhile the utterly incompetent research grant administrator was like "I filed it, shrug?"
Eventually this got straightened out. But not until after the the date that was retroactively made the end date for my health insurance. So, of course, the process of starting to send me the paperwork to enroll in COBRA could not even start before they had already told the insurance company to terminate me.
I know that once the COBRA stuff gets processed, my coverage will be reinstated retroactively, so eventually they will pay everything I'm racking up now. But, hassle, ugh. Just had an argument this morning at the doctor's office, trying to explain that no really, I will have had health insurance for this day, even though the health insurance right now is saying no, that's how COBRA works. And all these appointments are happening now. Some stuff I had put off, for both Vic and myself, just because I was busy, and some stuff just happens to be coming around now.
I wrote the check for the first two months of COBRA last Tuesday, but the mailman probably did not pick it up until Wednesday. All I know about the current state of that being processed is that they haven't deposited my check yet.
The company that handles paperwork for HR's benefits department is in Manchester, NH. How long does it take mail to get delivered to New Hampshire? How long should I reasonably give them to handle the paperwork, and deposit the check, before starting to get annoyed at them?
