Some critter chewed the leaves off of all my little zucchini plants.

Is your garden fenced? We used to have a critter that would bite all the tomatoes that were growing up against the chicken wire.

Not yet. I didn't think I needed to get that done before the plants produced anything close to resembling vegetables. I didn't think the critters would eat *seedlings*.

I was going to try to get the soil tested before bothering with the effort of putting up fencing. I called Mahoney's in Tewksbury to ask about testing for lead, and whoever answered the phone seemed to think that was a really weird and obscure question. So, no progress on anything... except finding out that my garden is not some magic woodchuck-free zone...

That would probably be a groundhog or a deer. Fencing is absolutely necessary around here... and groundhogs are persistent.

I"m sure the critter is extremely pleased that you deigned to plant his
lunch/dinner for him. He expects more. :)

Congratulations, looks like you've got woodchucks too. I just wonder how the previous owner got away with an unfenced garden?

I don't know, I really don't understand that. They said they couldn't grow corn without it getting all eaten by wildlife, but I was under the impression that they managed to grow other vegetables.
