worst movie of the year
Oct. 16th, 2004 11:42 pmTeam America really really sucked.
Setting aside the fact that I don't enjoy juvenile gross-out humor, and this movie laid that on really, really thick, way beyond South Park levels.
What really offended me was the implication that well-meaning liberals who disapprove of the randomly violent cowboy-style "war on terror" are natural allies of the likes of Kim Jung Il, so much so that they would undertake his violent dirty work. That's so wrong, I'm just speechless.

Date: 2004-10-17 10:08 am (UTC)Why did they like it? I guess it's a question of how deep you think the satire goes, how you read the movie-- whether you read it as crystallizing or demolishing Bush's world-view. On the surface level of the movie, everyone is stupid on both sides of the war-on-terror debate, but the liberals are more stupid/destructive/evil. So when you view something that's obviously satirical, presenting some set of people as stupid, is the piece satirizing those people for being stupid, or is it satirizing the world-view that misinterprets them as being stupid?

(I saw a little South Park cartoon when it was first out on the web, and thought it was funny, if a bit juvenile. In fact, word spread about it at Bentley so fast that all the kids trying to download it crashed the then-antiquated network. I saw it as a one-liner... and am still amazed at how much more was done with it.)

That's so wrong, I'm just speechless.
Well, like most of the libels in the movie, it's not quite as wrong as one might want it to be. Certainly, it goes beyond the truth, but that's the point of that sort of satire.
