I know how the shoe-thrower felt: I feel a shadow of the same feeling too, when I see Bush's stupid ugly monkey face. Except, of course, not living in Iraq, the problems are not so in my face, so my rage doesn't stay at the same level.

Hopefully the fellow won't get into too much trouble. I don't think the Iraqi government can keep him too long or mistreat him, because he has overwhelming public sympathy. But I don't know, for sure, that he wasn't turned over to the the American military. That could be bad: the Americans don't understand Iraqi culture, and might have mistaken it for an attempt to hurt the Prez, more than just a free-speech act.

Not a mistake Bush himself made: he understood fully well that it was just the Iraqi way to say "fuck you", and that it wasn't a serious attack. He just kind of laughed it off.

I would love to have a flying shoe user icon. But I don't think I have any software for making an animated GIF handy.

I remember a photo from the 'liberation' of Iraq that showed a throng of people sitting along a large wall, waving their arms. It was captured something like "happy Iraqis welcoming their american rescuers" or similar drivel. Blown of course to anyone with a sense of middle eastern culture in that they were sitting along the wall precisely so that they could wave the soles of their shoes at the troops as they passed by. Google-fu fails me at finding a copy or I'd include it.
